“The nursing profession will progress towards patient-centered care – having the patients more involved, aware of their care and making the appropriate decisions for healthy living.”

Becoming both a nurse and an educator is the fulfillment of a childhood dream for Nicola Melisha Madou.

“Nursing and teaching are my first loves and being able to have the opportunity to do both gives me an overwhelming joy,” she says.

Born in Jamaica, Madou came to the U.S. in 2004 and received her associate degree in nursing from Borough of Manhattan Community College. She completed her bachelor’s degree at New York City College of Technology and earned master’s degrees in nursing and public health in community and urban health at Hunter College.

Madou says some of the best moments of her nursing career have been helping other nurses attain their goals, including seeing members of her staff complete their bachelor’s, master’s and family nurse practitioner degrees, as well as having her unit receive DAISY Foundation and Patient Experience Awards.

“My goal is to continue to excel in my career and to educate the new generation of nurses on how to improve safe quality patient care and also to be a role model by setting an example and to help to improve both patient and staff satisfaction,” she says.

She also says she is proud of “the new nurses that I have trained, as I continue to help them evolve into independent competent nurses and become engaged with providing quality patient care.”

“I believe in providing the same care to all patients regardless of socioeconomic background and being very authentic as I relate to the patients, staff and leadership,” she says. “The message I hope that my patients and their families take away from their experience with me is that I am caring nurse that will provide the highest-quality care to the best of my ability. As a nurse, I have integrity and will ensure that I uphold the standards of my nursing practice.”
