Our Nurse Practitioner Preceptors Share their Stories
We are fortunate that NYC Health + Hospitals is home to a unique nurse practitioner (NP) graduate student training program.
Nurse practitioner training is similar to physician internships, where nurse practitioner graduate students are paired with a medical professional — typically an experienced nurse practitioner or attending physician — and receive real-world, hands-on clinical training and mentorship. Through this pairing, NP students gain important experience that builds confidence and receive valuable insight into interacting with real patients.
The Hunter College Evelyn Lauder Nurse Practitioner (NP) Fellowship at the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing is funded by a $52 million gift from Leonard A. Lauder in honor of his late wife, Evelyn Lauder, a Hunter alumna.
The program brings 15–25 adult‑gerontology, primary care, and psychiatric–mental health Lauder nurse practitioner fellows into NYC Health + Hospitals for immersive clinical rotations. Each year, up to ten fellows are hired as into full‑time roles at NYC Health + Hospitals.

Recently, Hunter College hosted a reception to celebrate this partnership and recognize the outstanding NYC Health + Hospitals nurse practitioner preceptors training their NP fellows. Our Chief Nursing Executive and SVP, Natalia Cineas, and several of the preceptors shared their thoughts about what the program means to them.
