Federal Changes to Medicaid

Federal Changes to Medicaid

NYC Health + Hospitals wants to help you keep your health insurance coverage.

What are the new rules?

If you are 19 to 64 years old, you may need to:

  • Renew more often: You may need to renew your coverage every 6 months
  • Prove work or other activity hours: You may need to work, go to school, train for a job, or volunteer for 80 hours each month, or earn at least $580 a month, or get an exception.

You will only need to show your work or activity hours when you are applying for or renewing your Medicaid.

Who does NOT have to follow these rules?

These rules may not apply to you if you are:

  • Pregnant now or were pregnant in the last year
  • Caring for a child under age 14 or someone with a disability
  • Already meeting or exempt from SNAP work requirements
  • Getting medical care for a health condition that makes it hard to meet the work rules
  • Getting treatment for substance use
  • On Medicare, a current or former foster care youth (under age 26), or were recently in jail

More information is on the New York State of Health’s “Stay Covered” webpage.

Do you get Cash Assistance?

Your Medicaid application will now be separate. You will need to renew your Medicaid on its own, separate from Cash Assistance.

What should you do today?

  • Update your info: Make sure New York State has your correct address, email address and phone number so you do not miss important letters.
  • Watch your mail: You will get a letter soon from the New York State of Health or Local Department of Social Services if these rules affect you.
