Stroke Care Center

The New York State Department of Health has designated NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island as a specialty Stroke Center. We have a neurosurgeon available 24 hours a day for this type of emergency.

The five most common stroke symptoms include:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion, or trouble speaking or understanding
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause

Other important but less common stroke symptoms include:

  • Sudden nausea, fever, and vomiting distinguished from a viral illness by the speed of onset (minutes or hours vs. several days)
  • Brief loss of consciousness or period of decreased consciousness (fainting, confusion, convulsions, or coma)

A stroke can happen to anyone at any moment. In fact, about 600,000 people have strokes every year. For many years, there was no hope for those suffering a stroke. However, recent breakthroughs have led to new treatments. For the treatments to work, the victim must get to a hospital immediately. Every minute counts!

It is very important to get to the emergency room within three hours to get the appropriate treatment — clot-buster (TPA). With proper treatment done within three hours, the blood supply will be restored and little or no brain damage will occur.
