NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan is a designated Stroke Center by New York State Department of Health. The goal of the Stroke Center is to deliver the highest possible quality care to our diverse patient population, integrating preventive and rehabilitative services to patients with cerebrovascular disease, based on the clinical expertise of stroke clinicians and in conjunction with the best clinical practice guidelines.

Metropolitan’s multidisciplinary stroke team has been recognized for our systematic hospital-wide approach to acute management of stroke. The hospital received the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association in 2017, 2018, and 2019 for improving quality of care and patient outcomes for stroke patients. Get with the Guidelines is designed to help hospitals make sure patients get the benefits of the latest scientific evidence-based treatment.

The Stroke Center, led by physicians and nurses with specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of stroke, has established protocols to ensure a timely response to patients who could potentially be suffering from a stroke or stroke symptoms. The Stroke Center offers immediate, enhanced brain imaging and evaluation to patients who present to the Emergency Department and could be suffering from a stroke or stroke-like symptoms. Using the latest advanced treatments, the stroke team can assess the patient and ensure provision of appropriate and individualized care. The Stroke Center has continuously demonstrated excellence in timely, rapid identification of strokes and timely administering clot-busting drugs as indicated.

Metropolitan has up-to-date diagnostic imaging including CT and CTA capabilities, available 24 hours a day. Our skilled technicians perform MRI and MRA as indicated. Also available are echocardiography and carotid duplex to all patients admitted for a stroke, with the ability to complete laboratory tests available around the clock.

The hospital hosts a monthly Stroke Center Support Group for patients, families, caregivers, and friends. The group offers participants an opportunity to share their stories and experiences. They also get practical advice, and help in gaining a sense of control, reducing anxiety, and improving coping skills. For information on the next scheduled meeting click here.
