NYC Health + Hospitals Announces New Season of Farmers Markets Near Patient Care Sites

Farmers markets make fresh fruits and vegetables more accessible for patients, visitors, staff, and the larger community

Jun 13, 2023

NYC Health + Hospitals today launched a new season of farmers markets hosted at public hospitals and community health centers across the city. The farmers markets, operated by local partners GrowNYC, Harvest Home, Uptown Grand Central, and the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, make it easy for anyone in the community to access fresh, local fruits and vegetables at an affordable price.

“Summer is a great time of year to try new fruits and vegetables, and we’re making it easier by bringing farmers’ markets to our campuses,” said NYC Health + Hospitals President and CEO Mitchell Katz, MD. “I want to thank our community partners for helping us provide fresh, local produce to our patients, staff, and communities.”

“The launch of the current season’s farmer’s markets by NYC Health and Hospitals, in collaboration with our community partners, serves as a testament to our steadfast commitment towards enhancing the accessibility to affordable produce within communities facing limited options. While prioritizing community health, this partnership recognizes the indispensable role of access to fresh fruits and vegetables in mitigating the prevalence of diet-related diseases. With utmost appreciation, we wholeheartedly endorse and champion the efforts undertaken by our invaluable local farmers,” said Kate MacKenzie, Executive Director of the Mayor’s Office of Food Policy.

Various payment options are available to help New Yorkers take advantage of farmers markets, and Fresh Food Box sites, including EBT/SNAP, Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) coupons, and Women, Infants and Children (WIC) coupons.

In addition, GrowNYC offers the Fresh Food Boxes program year-round at NYC Health + Hospitals/Carter. The boxes offer seasonal, local produce well below market price through the power of collaborative purchasing. Individuals can sign up for the program at https://www.grownyc.org/foodbox/UGC
