Robert Gore, ED Physician at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County, Is Named 2018 Presidential Leadership Scholar
Prestigious Program Brings Together Leaders from across the Non-Profit, Military, Public, and Private Sectors

The Presidential Leadership Scholars Program, a partnership between the presidential centers of George W. Bush, William J. Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and Lyndon B. Johnson, has appointed Robert Gore, MD, NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County Emergency Department attending physician, to its 2018 class. Dr. Gore was selected by the prestigious leadership training program for developing and implementing the Kings Against Violence Initiative (KAVI), a youth violence prevention program.
The Presidential Leadership Scholars Program was designed to cultivate a diverse network of leaders who are capable of addressing our nation’s most pressing challenges. Over the course of six months, the executive-style education series provides mid-career professionals with the opportunity to learn from former presidents, key administration officials, respected scholars, and academics.
“I feel fortunate to be able to participate in the Presidential Leadership Scholars Program and represent the Kings Against Violence Initiative and NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County,” said Dr. Gore. “This is a great opportunity to rewrite the narrative on youth violence and promote social change while working with thought leaders from across the country, including past presidents.”
In addition to his roles at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County, Dr. Gore, a Brooklyn native, serves as an assistant clinical professor of emergency medicine at SUNY Downstate. Founded in 2011, the Kings Against Violence Initiative provides participating youths with academic support, mentoring, and the development of advocacy skills. The program also engages adults to assist in support of participating youths, as well as their families. Dr. Gore continuously seeks new ways to build the program, and his appointment to the Presidential Leadership Scholars Program is expected to provide new ways to build on successes already achieved.

Under his stewardship, the Kings Against Violence Initiative has provided a nurturing environment that promotes a positive outlook and engages our youth in activities that help them to thrive and become productive adults. NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County will continue our tradition of standing with Dr. Gore to support KAVI and its mission to enrich the lives and health of the youth and families in our communities.”
This is not the first recognition for Dr. Gore’s work leading the Kings Against Violence Initiative. Most recently, in 2017, he received the Distinguished Community Service Award from the United Hospital Fund.
The 2018 Presidential Leadership Scholars Program class includes 59 scholars, chosen following a rigorous application and review process. All were selected based on leadership growth potential and the strength of their personal leadership projects aimed at improving the civic or social good by effectively addressing a problem or need in a community, profession, or organization.
The latest class joins an active network of 181 scholars, who are using lessons learned through the program to make a difference in their communities in the U.S. and around the world. Examples of these scholar-led efforts include providing employment opportunity and mentorship to veterans, combating the opioid epidemic through doctor training and patient care, empowering women with economic opportunities through clean energy in Africa, and deploying much needed resources in the wake of natural disasters.
