NYC Health + Hospitals Launches "DOCS4NYC" Campaign to Recruit More Primary Care Physicians

Health System Seeks to Fill Dozens of Open and New Physician Jobs to Expand Access to Community-Based Primary Care and Support Financial Turnaround

May 23, 2018

New York, NY

NYC Health + Hospitals today announced the system’s first official physician recruitment campaign in recent history to help fill 75 new and open primary care physician positions and expand access to community-based primary care across the five boroughs. The new recruitment campaign, DOCS4NYC, uses the tag line “A career like no other, in a city like no other” to appeal to physicians devoted to the organization’s mission to care for all without exception and to highlight the unique opportunities offered by practicing medicine in the nation’s largest public health care system. The targeted investment in primary care physicians is also part of the health system’s financial sustainability strategy to help reverse the decline in patient visits by increasing capacity and access in underserved neighborhoods.

NYC Health + Hospitals also encourages mission-driven nurse practitioners to apply to be primary care providers.

“Primary care is at the center of my vision for the future of our essential health system,” said Mitchell Katz, MD, president and chief executive officer of NYC Health + Hospitals. “As a primary care physician, I’ve always had a passion for both primary care and public health systems, and we are looking for like-minded doctors who are excited about transforming the nation’s largest public health system by positioning primary care at its very core.”

“For our primary care clinicians, what they do every day is not just a job, it’s a passion,” said Theodore Long, MD, MHS, vice president for primary care at NYC Health + Hospitals. “This is the place to grow as a clinician through exceptional leadership opportunities. This is the place that can help ease the burden of student debt thanks to special loan forgiveness programs. And this is the place to practice if you believe in our mission to turn no one away and offer high-quality care equally to all New Yorkers.”

The DOCS4NYC campaign includes a new website, docs4nyc.org, that features compelling video testimonials by physicians, including Dr. Long, whose personal stories underscore the growth and leadership opportunities available to primary care doctors in the system.

Other elements of the DOCS4NYC campaign include direct outreach to residency directors across the country, targeted appeals to graduating medical residents in New York City, including those who are about to complete their residency at NYC Health + Hospitals, and advertising in medical journals and social media. Interested applicants can send their CVs directly via email to docs4nyc@nychhc.org.

“There is support for different leadership opportunities,” said Meena Fatimi, MD, in one of the videos. “I know some colleagues who are establishing a buprenorphine clinic, someone else established an A1C clinic, so I like that there is support for even the more junior attending physicians.”

“A lot of providers who come to Health + Hospitals qualify for grants to repay their student loans,” said Karyn Singer, MD, in another of the videos. “It’s a huge burden off someone’s shoulders to have student loans paid back. Personally, that’s helped me significantly.”
