The three most important words during May are Moms, Mother’s Day and Mammograms. This Mother’s Day, show your mother how much you care. Be sure she speaks to her doctor about getting a life-saving mammogram. A mammogram can diagnose breast cancer at an earlier stage when treatment is more effective.
There has been much debate about when and how often a woman should get a mammogram. But there is little debate that mammograms save lives. By the age of 50, most women should be getting routine mammograms. Some guidelines recommend starting even earlier. If you’re between 40 and 50, speak with your doctor to determine when is right for you.
Make a mammogram appointment throughout the year at a NYC Health + Hospitals location listed below.
A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast that makes it possible to detect tumors that cannot be distinguished by visual examination or touch. It can also detect micro-calcifications (tiny deposits of calcium in the breast) that may indicate undetected breast cancer. Early detection of breast cancer by mammography has reduced the number of deaths from breast cancer among women.
