The internship serves as the link between pre-doctoral and post-doctoral clinical training. Traditional rotating interns at NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island may choose to enter residency training in Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pediatrics or may prepare for a specialty in other areas such as Radiology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Neurology or Anesthesia. The rotating internship provides a year of maturation and transition from application of pre-doctoral knowledge to clinical decision-making and skills.
Exposure to core disciplines is essential for all physicians, whether the ultimate training goal is to practice as a generalist or a specialist. In addition, osteopathic medicine has always promoted primary care exposure as a basis for eventual continued study in any specialty.
The core disciplines include: Internal Medicine, Family Practice, General Surgery, Obstetrics/Gynecology (female reproductive medicine), Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine. The program provides exposure to Pathology, Radiology and Anesthesia, as well as clinical experience in the ambulatory setting during Family Practice rotation, also Pediatrics, office Gynecology, medical and surgical sub-specialties.
NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island offers up to 6 intern positions and participates in the AOA match program annually. The internship functions in coordination with AOA- accredited programs in Internal Medicine, also recently opened Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics. Osteopathic Ob/GYN program will start in July 2016.
The minimum period of service for the completion of the internship is 52 weeks.
