WIC Program

Keeping parents and their babies healthy is the goal of the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. WIC is a federally funded, state-run program that focuses on the nutritional well-being of pregnant people and new parents, as well as their children up to age five.

Who is Eligible?

Pregnant, breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding parents, infants, and children up to five years old may be eligible for the WIC program. In addition, fathers or other legal guardians may also be eligible to receive WIC benefits for their infants and children up to age five. Our friendly, dedicated staff will help determine whether you qualify for WIC and help you through the application process.

To qualify for WIC you must:

  • Be a resident of New York State (though you don’t have to be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident)
  • Meet certain income requirements

How WIC Helps You

Once you are enrolled in our WIC program you will meet with one of our WIC nutritionists, who will counsel you about how to stay healthier before and after pregnancy. WIC nutritionists teach participants that food choices, lifestyle, overall health, and behavior affect pregnancy and child development. Our nutritionists will also advise you on creative ways to encourage children to eat more fruits and vegetables to help them get a better start in life.

WIC parents and their kids save money on food when they take advantage of this free program, part of which includes monthly WIC benefits to be used specifically on nutritionally healthy food options. The money can be used at regular grocery stores to purchase food for your family. Our staff will discuss the food package, details about which foods can be purchased with the WIC check, and how to get the most out of your monthly allowance.

The WIC program also provides:

  • Breastfeeding classes
  • Peer Support and Counseling
  • Classes on feeding your children

In addition to this nutritional support, WIC staff is a great referral source for medical and other health care needs for you and your family.
