NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health is home to some of the best podiatrists in New York City. Our doctors provide comprehensive diagnosis and care for patients with conditions of the foot in our advanced foot clinic.

Foot pain, deformities, and other conditions can significantly impact a patient’s quality of life. We can help. We will work with you to understand your symptoms and make a treatment plan that decreases or eliminates your pain and increases your mobility.

Our specialized services include:

  • Diabetes-related Foot Care: Patients with diabetes can develop a variety of foot conditions. Our doctors screen patients for symptoms to slow and stop the progression of diabetes-related foot complications, including skin changes, calluses, circulation-related issues, neuropathy, foot ulcers, and more.

We provide non-surgical and surgical intervention for diabetes patients with significant challenges, including Charcot Foot, a condition in which bones of the foot weaken and become more prone to injury and fracture.

  • Wound Care: We provide exceptional care for foot and ankle wounds, including those related to injury, ingrown toenails, and diabetes. Treatments include surgical removal of unhealthy or infected tissue (excisional debridement) and negative pressure wound therapy, which speeds the growth of new blood vessels and leads to faster healing.

South Brooklyn Health hosts a Wound Care Fellowship in lower extremity wound care, recognized by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education. Fellows assist with treating lower extremity wounds in outpatient and inpatient settings and provide wound care outreach and education to other medical professionals.

Our expert team also provides diagnosis and care for the following symptoms and conditions:

  • Athlete’s foot: Fungal skin infection indicated by scaly, peeling, or cracked skin; can be accompanied by itchiness, burning, blisters, or other skin inflammation.
  • Bunion: Bony bump on the joint at the base of the big toe; may cause soreness and redness.
  • Corn and callus: Hardened, thick layers of skin, often caused by friction or pressure; individuals may seek treatment if they cause pain.
  • Flat feet: Arches of the feet flatten with pressure (e.g., when standing); individuals may seek treatment if they cause pain.
  • Foot pain: Common Causes of Foot Pain Include: Plantar Fasciitis, Posterior Tibial Tendonitis, Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, Bunions, Hammertoe, Metatarsalgi, Turf Toe.
  • Hammer toe: Abnormal bend in the middle joint of a toe, usually in one of the middle three toes; similarly, mallet toe is an abnormal bend in the joint nearest the toenail.
  • Heel pain and injury: Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain, according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. The condition occurs when the plantar fascia on the bottom of the foot becomes inflamed. This ligament is responsible for supporting the foot’s arch.
  • Ingrown toenail: The side or corner of the toenail grows into the skin, often affecting the big toe; can become inflamed and painful.
  • Nail injury: Almost everyone has somehow smashed a fingernail or toenail and later seen blood under their nail bed. A subungual hematoma is usually caused by trauma from a heavy object or from frequent rubbing or friction against a shoe. It occurs when the blood vessels break open under the nail, causing blood to pool. Your toenail may look like a black, blue or purple bruise.

Other nail trauma is painful and can cause your nail to accidently tear or split (lacerations), fall off completely (avulsion), or it can cause an ingrown toenail.

Toe Pain: Common chronic causes of toe pain include bunions, toe deformities, and toenail problems. Common toe injuries include sprain and fracture. Common medical problems leading to toe pain symptoms include gout, diabetes, and arthritis. Additionally, warts, corns, or calluses can cause toe pain.

Treatment of foot deformities in children can vary significantly from that needed in adults. Fortunately, pediatric orthopedists who specialize in this field can bring to bear a range of non-operative and operative techniques specifically developed to address the distinctive needs of children, which include special attention to preserving the integrity of the growth plate, allowing continued growth and development of the foot.

  • Plantar fasciitis: Inflammation of tissue on the bottom of the foot that connects the heel bone to toes (plantar fascia); can cause sharp pain.
  • Plantar wart: Like other warts, plantar warts are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV); can cause pain due to their location on the bottom of the foot.

Our expert team gives excellent attention and care to every patient; our cutting-edge technology makes us a sought-after resource for pharmaceutical and medical equipment companies to conduct research. We also support a Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency program.
