NYC Health + Hospitals today showcased expansion of its high-performing post-acute care services, with additional community-based short-term rehabilitation services for New Yorkers.

The health system is now opening the last unit of 60 new skilled nursing facility beds for seniors and clinically complex patients at NYC Health + Hospitals/Gouverneur, a facility designated “Best Nursing Home” by U.S. News & World Report and ranked with the highest five-star rating by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for its high-quality services and home-like environment. The new beds are expected to provide much-needed care in the community to patients and generate $10 million in new revenue annually for the health system.

“We are excited to expand our best-in-class nursing care and rehabilitation services and provide much-needed continuity of care to many more residents of the Lower East Side, as well as other patients served by the 11 hospitals in our public health care system,” said Maureen McClusky, NYC Health + Hospitals senior vice president of post-acute care services. “Having skilled nursing facilities and hospitals that are part of the same health system means that our rehabilitation teams can work closely with doctors to understand a patient’s previous care and create a personalized treatment plan that best meets their needs. And because we’re all part of the same family, patients can expect a smooth transition from the hospital to the next level of care.”

Barbara Smith, a resident at NYC Health + Hospitals/Gouverneur Skilled Nursing Facility, shares a laugh with the facility’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jeffrey Nichols.

The new beds occupy nearly 45,000 square feet of existing space in two new units at 227 Madison Street, a unique, modern health care facility that includes the 5-star nursing home and the health system’s largest community health center serving Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Renovated as part of the facility’s recent $250 million modernization effort, the new units are fully operational, staffed by licensed professionals.

“We focus on providing the best possible outcomes for our patients,” said Susan Sales, chief executive officer of NYC Health + Hospitals/Gouverneur. “We offer a comprehensive team-based approach that includes physical therapists, occupational therapists, medical staff, and social workers. I am also proud of our affiliation with NYU Rusk Rehabilitation and the quality of care that we provide to patients every day.”

NYC Health + Hospitals is hiring 75 additional health care professionals, including nurses, therapists, social workers, dieticians, and other support staff for the expansion.

A 5-Star Skilled Nursing Facility That Feels Like Home

With the addition of the 60 beds, NYC Health + Hospitals/Gouverneur will now accommodate more short-term rehabilitation patients annually. The space features a home-like environment, with private bedrooms in single rooms and double-room suites, large, open dining areas, and comfortable community spaces, featuring fireplaces. The design also includes a private entrance to the nursing facility to enhance the experience of patients and their families.

The rehabilitation area features state-of-the-art equipment to serve the needs of patients recovering from heart attacks, strokes, traumatic brain injuries, and other debilitating conditions.
