Nora V. Bergasa, MD, Chief of Medicine at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan, was recognized with the 2017 Heritage Innovation in Healthcare Delivery Award, presented by Heritage Provider Network, the nation’s leading physician-led managed care organization, and Crain’s Custom Studio. The award recognizes an innovator in the development of new modes of diagnosis, treatment, and care who actively improves the delivery of services and improves the quality of health care. The winners were announced at a luncheon at the New York Athletic Club.
The 2017 Heritage Healthcare Innovation Awards recognize the best of today’s health care clinicians, administrators, and researchers who are making measurable improvements in health status, improving access to health care, positively impacting patient quality of care, and demonstrating long-term affordability in New York. Finalists were selected from all five boroughs of New York City, as well as Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, and Rockland Counties. A diverse panel of independent expert health care judges guided the selection process.
“All of us at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan are extremely proud of Dr. Bergasa for receiving this award recognizing her accomplishments and her commitment and dedication to improving the lives of our patients,” said Alina Moran, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan. “She is an outstanding clinician, researcher, and teacher, whose groundbreaking work on diseases of the liver and treatment of patients with chronic viral hepatitis has greatly benefited our patients and our community. We couldn’t be prouder of her.”
“Dr. Nora Bergasa, a distinguished member of PAGNY, embodies the very set of values and bedside manners that every patient wishes and needs,” added Dr. Luis R. Marcos, CEO of the Physician Affiliate Group of New York. “Her distinctive warm smile projects the humanity that is so powerful and so precious in the health care world. Indeed, Dr. Bergasa’s knowledge and dedication and her amazing ability to create healing partnerships not only have made her loved and sought after by patients, but have led to remarkable levels of patient satisfaction, compliance, and treatment outcomes.”
In addition to her leadership role at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan, Dr. Bergasa is Professor of Medicine at New York Medical College. She completed her residency in internal medicine and her fellowship in gastroenterology at the State University of New York at Downstate in Brooklyn, New York, and her clinical and basic hepatology research training at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Bergasa is recognized internationally for her research on pruritus in liver disease. A recent reference from Thompson Reuter’s Web of Science places her h-index, which measures the productivity and impact of the published work of a scientist or scholar, at an impressive 30. In 2016, Dr. Bergasa was awarded a mastership from the American College of Physicians.
Dr. Bergasa has extensive experience in hepatology, including the care of patients with liver disease and psychiatric and substance abuse comorbidities. One of her goals has been to take the treatment of chronic viral hepatitis to patients attended in behavioral health, which, in collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry, has led to the establishment of a hepatitis clinic in that service. She has also led the establishment of a gastroenterology fellowship program at Metropolitan.
